What the Varchar?
I have not introduced my kids to any online games yet. They have played the Wii and really like it- to the point where I already have had to explain why they cannot play it all day long or whenever they want to. But being the wife of a super geek, I know that my children need to be computer literate and why not introduce them through games? When I was offered the opportunity to try JumpStart.com's online games I was very interested to see how my kids would like it. I decided my youngest is a little too young to be on my computer (just turned 3). Instead, I had my four year old, who will start kindergarten in the fall, sit with me to check it out. Immediately, he liked they way it looked and we had so much fun picking out his avatar. He did a pretty good job making it look like himself. He laughed that we could pick a completely random name that the game will generate for you. They are pretty funny. You can pick your own name from the list they provide too.
Once you get into the actual game, you can walk your "Jumpee" around the virtual world and find age appropriate games to play. Storyland is for 3-5 year olds, Adventureland and Marineland are K-2nd grade and FutureLand for the older kids. In addition, they have the Enchanted Sanctuary where kids can hatch and raise own Dragon. I love this idea! They also have a really cool new addition called The Screamer, a virtual roller coaster. Included in your membership is also a huge selection of downloadable games and lessons for kids of all ages. I can see this coming in very handy as a way of practicing certain subjects outside of school and the kids are just playing a game!
We had a great time trying this out and I know you will too! JumpStart.com has generously offered a FREE 3-month membership to one of my readers!
