Do you dream of building skyscrapers and high-rises? Or maybe you just have a love of engineering and are looking for a constructive way to express it. Whatever your reasons for your interest in architecture, here are just a few tips for becoming a world-class architect.

1. Educate Yourself in a Variety of Topics

Did you know that architects use a lot of math? They might also need knowledge of everything from geography to meteorology. While the popular image of an architect unusually involves sketches and blueprints, artistry is only a small portion of their jobs, so make sure you're educating yourself in a wide variety of disciplines to prepare yourself for your new career.

2. Get the Right Tools

CAD/CAM software is a must, so look for suites like MasterCam for SolidWorks to get started. You should also invest in architectural books, guides, photo albums and instructional manuals. Last but not least, don't forget your measuring tools; you need to be comfortable with lines, figures, numbers and measurements, and what's more, you need to be comfortable finding and organizing them without help.

3. Network

Networking is a critical skill in any field, but it's especially true for architects, so don't be afraid to put yourself out there and make some contacts. Join the engineering club at your school; subscribe to magazines and newsletters about the latest in architecture; ask if you can "shadow" any professionals in the area so that you can gain real-world experience on the job.

4. Get Online

You've already read about the importance of CAD/CAM software, but what you may not realize is that most architectural work is done digitally these days. While architects still sketch and scribble to a certain degree, the industry has come a long way from the days of old-fashioned paper blueprints. If you want to succeed, it's critical that you know how to use a computer.

5. Remember Your Motivation

There will come a day when you wonder if the struggle is worth it. The answer is yes, but it might not be apparent when you're stressed, tired or just frustrated by the demands of your education. Never forget why you wanted to be an architect in the first place.

These are just a few tips for becoming an architect. It isn't always an easy career path, but it can be an incredibly rewarding one, so it's well-worth pursuing. Good luck!
